If you’ve been waiting for a while to refurbish your kitchen, you’ll probably have been collecting ideas that have shaped what you want the finished room to look like. Whether its from friends’ kitchens, magazines, television programmes or kitchen showrooms, you’ll have a list of the things you like, features you want and equipment you need. Once you’ve decided to go ahead, you need to do some serious planning.
The Best-planned Kitchens
Refurbishing a kitchen is a big job, whether you’re doing a DIY kitchen or you’re using professional trades to help. In order for kitchens to be properly planned, you’re going to have to decide the best place to put everything including fridges, hobs, ovens, dishwashers and more. You may be restricted by where utilities currently come into your home, or you may want to extend or re-route piping and wiring so that you can have everything exactly where you want it. What you can’t do is make a start and then change your mind, as this will inevitably incur extra costs and extra hassle. Get it together by starting with the basics and moving on from there:
- Design – it’s often best to get a professional kitchen designer involved. Not only will they have the experience of hundreds of other kitchens; they’ll also know how to plan for an easy-to-use kitchen, how to take account of utilities and what will and won’t work in the space you have. It’s a great way to ensure that you have a basic plan that works for you before you start buying any units or appliances.
- Research – the kitchens market is huge and there’s a massive choice of unit and door styles, kitchen appliances, worktops, flooring, tiling and finishes. Unless you already have a very clear idea of what you want, take the time to research what works in kitchens like yours and what doesn’t. Look at colours, space-saving devices, storage options and more to make sure you’ve covered everything you need to get the perfect kitchen you want.
- Budget – a new kitchen can be as expensive as you make it. It’s perfectly possible to get beautiful kitchens on a budget, but you can also spend more on the highest quality units and doors if you choose. Just make sure that you know how much you can afford to spend and talk to an expert about how the money should be apportioned. It may be better, for example, to spend more on good quality appliances that won’t need replacing in a few years’ time.
